Think Happy Thoughts

Well, we are at home! Our oncologist (Dr. Maisel) sent us home from the hospital yesterday afternoon. After three days of intensive testing--CT Scan, MUGA Scan, PET Scan, Large Biopsy Surgery and a Bone Marrow Biopsy, and tons of blood drawn, he said Eric was just as well off or better staying at home while we await the results from most of the tests. The main one we are waiting for is the Large Biopsy. I said in my last post that the results were due back over the weekend, but it seems the "scary disease checker" pathologists don't work weekends. Let's let them get their rest so they can be sure to get the facts down 100% correctly. I'm all for it. Now the timeframe is hopefully by Tuesday.

So last night we both slept pretty well, except Eric was given some pretty heavy steroids to get a jumpstart at shrinking his tumor until we get to the hardcore chemo, and it's giving him a little insomnia. Lots of reading will be getting done by him in the days to come when he can't sleep. Anyone have any book recommendations?

Today we took the girls to see Alice in Wonderland and I got my hair cut as I don't foresee being able to get it done in the near future. I was way overdue and went ahead and had her cut it a bit shorter than normal in case it's a while before I can get another cut. Eric on the other hand (teehee), is in dire need of a haircut, but we are holding off, as his is about to be microscopically short! Perfect for the Texas summers!

We have a few errands to run tomorrow and lots to consider in the coming days. He is going to work on Monday. He still can't talk clearly, so don't call him at work, you crooks or you'll be sorry! (He is a legal specialist for the US Attorney's office and collects restitution from former federal criminals) If you do call, you may think you're talking to the Godfather and he's likely to "make you a deal you can't refuse".

Then Tuesday, will be the "big day" with Dr. Maisel at 1:15 to discover our fate and see what we're in for over the next days, weeks, months, etc. He told us to pack our bags, just in case he wants to start chemo in the hospital (mainly if it IS Burkitt's--the chemo is especially hard on the body and he'll need extra monitoring).

We truly appreciate all the love, prayers and thoughts ya'll have been sending our way. The personal emails and guidance are welcome testaments to God's faithfulness and we have felt each prayer as you've spoken them. Thankyouthankyouthankyou!! Please don't stop.

Also, some of ya'll have so wonderfully requested our address to send cards, etc. Eric would be stoked to get some from ya! Here you go:

Eric and Susan Liles
7920 Sunrise Dr.
Watauga, Tx 76148

I'll try and post as soon as possible after our appointment on Tuesday.

  11. Well I have no actual book recommendations, but I have the Barnes & Noble nook eReader - and I love the fact that I can download whatever I want wherever I want - so you never run out of books no matter where you are! It's expensive but well worth it and I am sure he'll use it a bunch through his ordeal...now if someone can recommend you some books, you'll be good to go! Thoughts and prayers are with you and your family!

  14. Oh Susie, I am SO sorry to hear about your husband! We have a friend who's 20 yr. old son was just diagnosed w/ lymphoma, and everything that you said your husband went through, this boy went through too. Are they saying it's hodgkins or non-hodgkins? If it's hodgkins, there's a 97% cure rate! I will hope and pray it's hodgkins!
Please know that I am thinking about you and your family, and will be sending prayers your way for a cure and fast recovery!
    {Hugs to you and your family}

  16. Truckloads of happy thoughts headed your way, Sus! Keep that awesome attitude! As for books for Eric, has he read any of Malcolm Gladwell's stuff? (He wrote The Tipping Point, Outliers, Blink, and his latest is What the Dog Saw) They're all great non-fiction titles that guys I know seem to enjoy. Hugs to the Liles Family!

  18. Hi, Susie. Will certainly keep
Eric and you in my prayers. All
the best to you both. As for
    reading suggestion, if you'd like
    something in a somewhat religious,
but uplifting vein, I have a few.
"The Shack" by Wm. Paul Young
    "The Celestine Prophecy", "The
    Celestine Vision" and "The Tenth
Insight", all by James Redfield are
    engaging, thought-provoking reads.
They make you think. Keep good
    thought.

  20. Susan I just heard this news and please know Im praying for you all! I truly believe every prayer helps! When my daughter Alexa got Cancer the world wide web of prayer warriors helped us through it! They are making so many strides in Cancer treatment these days. Sounds like he went to the doctor as soon as he noticed something, so that is goos.Im sure with a positive outlook, lots of prayer and treament this will all one day be a bad memory. If you need anyone to listen I know how you all are feeling. Hugs to you and your family!!

  22. Hugs Susan! Thank you so much for taking the time to update us on Eric's condition and will continue praying and hoping for some positive news. Hope the bug guy gets lots of rest this weekend too!

A good book I just finished ready is Michael J. Fox's The Adventures of an Incurable Optimist. Your post reminded me much of his outlook and the way he's been able to approach the challenges he's had to face.

Will be praying and thinking of you and waiting for Tuesday to come...HUGS!!!

  32. Susan,

Thanks for checking out my blog and I will be checking in on you to to see how y'all are doing. This part was the scariest for me, waiting for the bone marrow and other results to see if the cancer had spread anywhere beyond the lymphoma tumor (mine is a similar scary-sounding size as Eric's, in my chest). So sorry you are going through this, I don't envy my husband at all having to deal with everything.

  33. I stopped in to see how you and your DH are doing. Waiting for test results always makes me edgy so I hope you did get them today. And that they give you the best news possible.

Reading is my favorite thing to do, even over stamping, lol. Jen recommended Three Cups of Tea and I really second that. Great, hopeful story that is beautifully told. For smart, engrossing distraction Daniel Silva's thrillers are wonderful. If you are thinking about stocking up on used books in paperback I'd say Dick Francis' mysteries rock. Strong, good people overcoming difficulty with grace and honor.

Gosh this was probably more than you wanted. But maybe it will be helpful. My heart is with you and all your family.
